An 8 year old Alabama boy has been arrested in connection with the murder of a 1 year old girl after being left unsupervised as his mother and her friends went out clubbing in October.
According to Birmingham police, the boy along with 5 other children were left at the home alone as the group of women went out for a night on the town October 10th. After the adults left around 11 pm, police state that sometime over the course of the evening the unidentified 8 year old male snapped and viciously attacked the younger child because she would not stop crying.
Sometime after the horrific attack, 1 year old Kelci Lewis succumbed to her injuries which included severe head trauma and major internal organ damage. Making matters even worse, the mothers returned to the house around 2 am and no one thought to check on Kelci who was found dead in her crib the next morning.
After the course of the investigation into Kelcis death, police arrested the young male as well as the infants 26 year old mother, Katerra Lewis. Both the Lewis and the 8 year old have been charged with manslaughter.
Police said some point that night, the 8-year-old boy viciously attacked the 1-year-old little girl because she wouldnt stop crying. She ultimately died from severe head trauma and major internal organ damage.
Police say Katerra Lewis, 26, left her 1-year-old daughter Kelci Lewis alone at the home, along with at least five other children ranging from 2 to 8 years old, to go clubbing with her friend, the homeowner and mother of the other children.
The sad part is you had an adult mother here who had the audacity to leave her 1-year-old in the custody of several other children at the house and none of those kids were over the age of 8…and so decided to go out to the club for that night, leave those kids there alone and unfortunately an 8-year-old was extremely agitated, it appeared, and really attacked the child, Birmingham Police Lt. Sean Edwards said in a news conference on Tuesday.
Edwards said Katerra Lewis stays at the home in the 7100 block of 2nd Avenue South with her friend, who is the mother of the 8-year-old boy charged with murder and the four other children who were left at the home.
Lt. Edwards said if the mothers had checked on the children when they got home, police would have probably arrived earlier and with medical help, theres a chance that Kelcis death could have been prevented.
Lewis was arrested Monday night, however she was released after posting a $15,000 bond.
Defense attorney Emory Anthony who is representing Lewis stated the following on the matter: I think they are trying to allege that she was reckless or negligent in some particular way, and well have to deal with that. Of course my client has a different story about what transpired.
Lt. Edwards explained that This is by far one of the saddest cases that Ive witnessed and been a part of ever since I became a police officer, adding that investigators are still struggling to process the case and how a child could have that much evil in his heart.
No education, no school, no degree, no training can really prepare you for an 8-year-old committing a heinous crime like this, Edwards said. Police Chief A.C. Roper echoed the same sentiments.
The remaining children were taken into the custody of child protective services.
